Mount Rainier National Park – A Scenic Drive Across the Park

Why We Went

We recently spent the day exploring Mount Rainier National Park, entering through the Nisqually Entrance and exiting through the Stevens Canyon Entrance. Rather than focusing on long hikes, we spent the day enjoying the drive, stopping at scenic viewpoints, roadside waterfalls, and picnic areas along the way.

Our Route

Entered: Nisqually Entrance

Exited: Stevens Canyon Entrance

This route allowed us to experience a large portion of the park while enjoying many of the scenic overlooks and roadside attractions without committing to a major hike.

Highlights of the Day

• Numerous roadside waterfalls
• Scenic mountain viewpoints
• Forest and river scenery
• Reflection Lakes
• Picnic lunch with incredible views
• A full cross-park driving experience

One of our favorite stops was Reflection Lakes, where Mount Rainier can often be seen mirrored in the water when conditions cooperate.

What We'd Do Differently

Nisqually Entrance Can Be Very Busy

Even on a weekday, traffic entering through the Nisqually Gate was significant.

Expect:

• Long lines
• Slow-moving traffic
• Wait times that can exceed an hour during peak periods

If you're coming from north of Renton or the Seattle area, we would strongly consider entering through the Stevens Canyon side instead.

Our Recommendation

For visitors coming from the north:

Enter and exit via the Stevens Canyon Entrance whenever possible.

Advantages include:

• Much shorter entrance waits
• Less city traffic
• A more scenic approach
• Easier access to quieter areas of the park

The drive itself feels more relaxed and less congested.

Paradise Visitor Area - Henry M Jackson Memorial Visitor Center

Paradise is beautiful and deservedly popular.

Unfortunately, it is also one of the busiest areas in the park.

During our visit:

• Parking was difficult to find
• Crowds were significant
• Traffic moved slowly

If you enjoy quieter experiences, you may want to:

• Arrive very early
• Visit during off-peak times
• Skip Paradise altogether and spend more time exploring other parts of the park

While scenic, we found many of the roadside viewpoints throughout the park equally rewarding.

Bring a Picnic

One of the best decisions we made was packing lunch.

The park offers countless scenic places to stop, relax, and enjoy the views without needing to leave the park in search of food.

A picnic lunch allowed us to take our time and enjoy the day at our own pace.

Sunrise

Sunrise is the highest point in the park accessible by vehicle and offers some of the most spectacular views of Mount Rainier.

Columnar Lava - On the drive from White River Campground to Sunrise Point, watch the left-hand road banks for andesite columns that formed from an ancient Mount Rainier lava flow.
