Why we went:
A scenic mountain loop drive through forests, rivers, waterfalls, and small mountain towns with plenty of opportunities to stop and explore along the way.


🚗 The Drive

We started in Granite Falls and followed the Mountain Loop Scenic Byway toward Darrington, making several stops along the route.

The drive itself is the highlight:

⚠️ Important Notes

The ice caves themselves can be dangerous and conditions change frequently.

Best enjoyed as:

  • a scenic hike

  • waterfall stop

rather than attempting to enter unstable ice areas.


🛻 Bonus Exploring

Four-wheel drive is not required for the main route, but it is recommended if you want to explore some of the many side roads in the area.

Some areas offer:

  • forest access roads
  • river viewpoints
  • quieter exploration away from the main byway

🌊 Along the Sauk River

One of the best parts of the drive is traveling alongside the Sauk River with plenty of scenic places to stop, relax, or grab lunch along the route.

This is definitely a “take your time” kind of drive.
