Nooksack Falls: The Waterfall You Almost Missed

There are some places you hike miles to reach.

And then there are places where you can hear the water before you've even gotten out of the car.

Nooksack Falls is one of those places.

Tucked away in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest along the Mount Baker Highway, Nooksack Falls is an easy-to-miss roadside stop that rewards anyone willing to pull over and take a short walk into the woods.

And when I say short, I mean short.

From the parking area, it's only about 0.1 miles round trip to the viewing area.

That's hardly a hike.

But what waits at the end of that little walk is an impressive 88-foot waterfall, roaring through a rocky canyon on the North Fork Nooksack River.

Sometimes you don't have to go very far to find something worth stopping for.

Nooksack Falls is located along Mount Baker Highway (Highway 542), approximately 7 miles east of Glacier and roughly 12 miles from the Mount Baker Ski Area.

From Glacier, continue east on Highway 542 for about 7.4 miles, then turn right onto Forest Road 33. Follow the forest road for approximately 0.6 mile to the parking area.

The trail to the falls is on the right side of the road.

There is no parking pass or entry fee listed for the trail.

The Walk

This may be one of the easiest waterfall walks in Washington.

Park the car, find the trail and start walking.

That's pretty much it.

The trail descends a short distance through the forest toward the viewing area. And somewhere along the way, you'll start hearing it—the unmistakable roar of water moving through the canyon.

Then the trees open up and there it is.

Nooksack Falls.

The viewing area looks down toward the North Fork Nooksack River as it plunges through the rocky gorge below.

It's a remarkably big payoff for such a small amount of effort.

The Falls

Nooksack Falls drops approximately 88 feet, cascading through a narrow, rocky canyon surrounded by the dense evergreen forest that makes this part of Washington so beautiful.

And there's something particularly satisfying about seeing a waterfall like this in its natural setting.

There isn't a big parking lot.

There isn't a visitor center.

There isn't a gift shop selling refrigerator magnets.

There's just the forest, the river and the sound of water crashing through the canyon.

That's my kind of roadside attraction.

The falls are also considerably more powerful than their relatively modest height might suggest. Depending on the season and water levels, the North Fork Nooksack can be moving with considerable force.

And that brings up something important.

Stay Behind the Fence

This isn't the place to go looking for a better photograph by climbing over a barrier.

The viewing area is fenced for a reason. The rocks around the falls are steep, wet and unstable, and the water below is powerful.

Stay on the designated trail and behind the fence.

There have been fatalities at Nooksack Falls over the years, so the warning signs here aren't simply suggestions. The falls are beautiful, but they deserve a healthy amount of respect.

You don't need to get closer to appreciate them.

In fact, the view from the designated overlook is plenty impressive.

A Perfect Road Trip Stop

This is where Nooksack Falls really shines.

It isn't necessarily a destination that requires you to dedicate an entire day to it.

Instead, it's a stop along the way.

If you're heading toward Mount Baker, exploring the Mount Baker Highway, or simply taking a drive through the North Cascades, Nooksack Falls is an easy place to pull over, stretch your legs and see something spectacular.

And because the walk is so short, you don't have to wonder whether you have enough time.

Stop.

Got thirty?

Stop and enjoy the river and the forest for a while.

That's one of the things I love about exploring Washington.

Some of the best discoveries aren't necessarily the destinations you planned.

They're the things you notice along the way.

Is It Worth Stopping?

Absolutely.

Nooksack Falls is exactly the kind of place I look for on a Washington road trip.

It's easy to reach, requires almost no hiking, doesn't require an admission fee, and delivers a waterfall that looks like it belongs at the end of a much longer trail.

If you're driving Highway 542, there's really no reason to simply drive past it.

Pull over.

Take the short walk.

Listen to the river.

Take a few photographs.

Then get back in the car and continue your adventure.

Sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones that take almost no planning at all.
